Townsville is the unofficial capital of North Queensland. While it may not be acknowledged as the official capital, it is the largest settlement in the region, with a population of approximately 179,000 people, though this can fluctuate.
Townsville’s population typically experiences a high turnover, partly due to a local army base and local government hiring many short-term workers. Many miners also work on fly-in/fly-out contracts wherein they only come into Townsville temporarily to work onsite instead of relocating with their families.
Many members of this fluctuating population will need treatment for substance use, and there is a lack of drug and alcohol rehabs in Townsville. However, an alternative to local treatment is coming to Kembali in Bali.
