Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental condition that develops after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. PTSD is characterised by intrusive memories that come as unwanted flashbacks, nightmares, or random thoughts of the event. People with this condition also often struggle with fear, guilt, or shame as a result of it. In worst-case scenarios, one may also engage in self-destructive behaviour.
PTSD is often associated with military service, and many combat veterans do experience it. It can also be triggered by physical abuse, sexual violence, being in a major accident, or getting caught in a natural disaster. It generally presents itself within months of the traumatic experience, but there are instances wherein symptoms may develop much later.
